Mumbai Undersea Tunnel sees seepage within 2 months of opening

This is the first undersea tunnel of India, part of the massive coastal road project designed to connect the Western suburbs of Mumbai with the island city.

The undersea tunnel goes underneath the Arabian Sea at a depth of 18 to 20 m for a stretch of almost 2.1 km. The diameter of the tunnel is 12.19m and the road is fit for 3 lanes including a dedicated bus lane. On March 11 only 1 of the tunnels, the south bound tunnel, was opened for public traffic and till date around 720,000 cars have passed through the tunnel.

On Sunday morning, on a routine trip, one of the commuters observed what seemed to be seepage. Since then there have been several videos and images that have surfaced on the internet. This has sparked a lot of concern on leakage, damage and seepage in the tunnel especially ahead of the monsoon season.

Official assessments are ongoing and there is no report on the damage, if any, and the cause of the seepage.
